Frequently asked questions

What size should a photo be for a website?
For a full-width banner, 1 600–1 920 px wide is plenty; for an in-article image, 800–1 200 px. Anything wider is downloaded by every visitor and then thrown away by the browser, which is the single most common cause of slow pages.
Can I resize without stretching the image?
Yes — set one dimension and lock the aspect ratio, and the other is calculated for you. Entering both numbers independently is what distorts a photo, so the lock is on by default.
Does enlarging a small image make it sharper?
No. Scaling up invents pixels that were never captured, so a 300 px image blown up to 2 000 px looks soft no matter which tool does it. Resizing down is lossless in the ways that matter; resizing up is not.
What is the difference between resizing and compressing?
Resizing changes how many pixels the image has; compressing changes how many bytes those pixels take up. A 4 000 px photo saved at low quality is still slow to load — often you want both, in that order.
